Brazilian big wave charger, Maya Gabeira, 26, has been hospitalized in Portugal after suffering from a near-drowning incident in big surf at Nazaré. What the world is now calling “Big Monday,” October 28th saw some of the largest sets of the year off the European coastline. SurferToday reported waves breaking in the 60-80 ft range, noting the record number of jet skis in the water and crowd of spectators watching anxiously from the cliff above. Nazaré was breaking in epic XXL proportions, and Brazilian tow team Carlos Burle and Maya Gabeira both scored waves worthy of Billabong XXL “Ride of the Year” entries for 2014 prior to the incident.
This morning on “Big Monday,” Gabeira took a huge set on the head and nearly drowned after being held under by two waves. She waved for help, but couldn’t hold on to the jet ski rope long enough during the resue in order to escape the whitewash. Knocked unconscious, she was then rushed to the hospital only with a broken ankle.

Gabeira surfed one of the biggest waves ever ridden by a female surfer during the Big Monday swell in the Nazaré North Canyon, when she was caught by the whitewater. SurferToday reported that after calling for jet ski support, “Gabeira lost consciousness due to exhaustion and had to be rescued by fellow Brazilian charger Carlos Burle, who brought her to shore for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).”
We are glad to report that the Red Bull team rider is on the road to recovery and in good spirits.
- “My dear friends, a broken ankle. Nothing more… Some salt water, but you know! I just need some prayer for a speedy recovery!!! Love u all,” Maya Gabeira posted from the hospital. Photo: @felipecesarano
